Canteen Covers - Strap

Post by Joseph Farmer »

Everybody is used to canteen covers being "mounted" and "dismounted." There are actually three. The third, and it's clear on the original drawings, is "strap."

Take the "dismounted." That is generally another word for "Infantry." They have haversacks and cartridge belts. What about Signal Corps? Engineers? Tank Corps? They do not. Round canteens, the 1800s type, are found right into 1916 and marked as such: "R.I.A. 1916." The replacement was the M-1910 canteen, but without the horse hanger or M-1910 wire hook.

That is one of the strap covers. There will be no M-1910 wire hook on back. Most of the strap covers I have encountered are dated 1917 and from one company. Which company? I'll give you a hint: a lot of the workers there were the wives of the men at Springfield Armory. Take it from there.

Unlike what the seller states, that is dated 1917.

Now we take a turn onto the express-way to Weirdville.

The 1918 replacement for the earlier one with the rings. Drawn but, as far as I know, never made. Why not? The field gear was transferred to the Quartermaster. This is an Ordnance Department drawing. So none of these were likely made but. But.

One loop on each side, instead of two the ordnance drawing had, but 1945? It returns in 1945? We've arrived in Weirdville.
