Canteen Cover Research

Too many people try to figure out what the stuff is forensically. Only forensically. Similarly, many books are written from that perspective. Some books are written from a research point of view. For books, therefore, there are four:

1) Research
2) Forensics
3) Research and Forensics
4) Synthesized

I respect those in the first 3. I do not respect those in group 4. They take the existing books and just kind of glom it all together. Those in group four never get it right. It's akin to a copy of a copy of a VHS tape. Those reading that as a source are another copy yet.

From a research point of view, multiple sources needed to be reviewed. Listed there are contracts. Also contract payouts. I did not encounter a contract for Wiley-Bickford-Sweet. I did encounter a contract payout. What is that? They had received a contract, and expended money in getting ready to produce, but received a cancellation before production. Thus no covers were made by them, Hamilton, or Jametown. Same goes for Phelan.

Some contracts aren't real specific on what "covers" were. The Ward Stilson is one of those. I've never seen one so it's likely not canteens. The M. & C. Skirt contract was for canteen covers.

Then we get to forensics. I have examples of covers from quite a few makers that I didn't find a contract for. One cover, in particular, I've only ever seen one of. I decided early one that I'd get one of each maker. I didn't care if it was mounted or dismounted, just one of each maker.

Research and forensics.
