40-Round Cartridge Box

Loops and a ring. These were designed to go with the Merriam pack. In 1906 they tested the Merriam pack. The box used a special wide waist belt with the suspenders connecting to that ring.
A number were altered as the dude above mentioned. Of those that Hollywood didn't have, most that I've seen are missing the internal dividers. This one has them. Strangely enough, I bought this, along with a Merriam pack, complete with the often missing wood poles, at a small farm auction in South Western Wisconsin. Not far from Camp McCoy.
2,300 were made. The waist belt was 2-1/2" wide. Note the Merriam pack canteen straps right above the boxes. Two are needed for each man having a Merriam pack. The test was a failure. Not much of a surprise there as New York had already discovered that over a decade earlier.
